Petrochem and Oils

Background

NanoSight instruments can visualise and rapidly and accurately size soot and additive particles in engine oils following suitable sample dilution. Lubricant soot is a by-product from the combustion of diesel. Fuel rich regions of the combustion chamber allow the forma-tion of soot which can then impinge on the cylinder wall and migrate to the oil sump. From the sump the soot will readily mix with bulk oil and circulate throughout the engine. Grinding of the soot particles in the gears may result in the formation of finely dispersed nanoparticles which will be maintained in suspension and result in significant engine wear.

Fig.1 Shows a size distribution generated from a lubricating oil sample containing nanoparticulate soot.
